Reception to honor retiring director planned for Dec. 19

The Fairhope Public Library Board of Trustees has announced Rob Gourlay as the library’s new director, effective Jan. 1, 2025.

Gourlay, who has served as the assistant director since 2015, was selected during a special called meeting on Dec. 9 and will succeed longtime director Tamara Dean.

Gourlay, an experienced librarian with nearly a decade at the Fairhope Public Library, brings a diverse skill set and a passion for community-centered library services to his new role. During his tenure, he has overseen major initiatives, including the 2024 renovations to the library’s second floor, IT and website management, marketing projects and securing grants for enhanced programming.

Gourlay’s journey to librarianship began with a childhood spent in a military family, living across the United States and abroad. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs from Florida State University and a Master’s in Library and Information Studies from the University of Alabama.

In addition to his professional achievements, Gourlay is celebrating personal milestones. He married earlier this year and is expecting his first child in March 2025.

Gourlay takes the reins from Dean, who will retire on Dec. 31 after 23 years of service, including 15 years as director. Dean’s leadership has been instrumental in transforming the library into a hub for learning and community engagement.

To honor Dean’s contributions, the library will host a reception on Thursday, Dec. 19, in the Giddens Conference Room from 10 a.m. to noon. Library patrons and community members are invited to attend and thank her for her years of service.
