Fairhope native named UND Flight Instructor of the Month

Posted

Last month, Collin Fritchen, a University of North Dakota graduate and certified flight instructor from Fairhope, was recognized as UND's Certified Flight Instructor of the Month.

Fritchen, who graduated in 2023 with a degree in Aeronautics and a major in Commercial Aviation, holds both Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) and Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument (CFII) certificates.

The selection process for this award is driven by student nominations, highlighting the positive impact flight instructors have on their students' aviation education. Fritchen's students praised his exceptional teaching, with one remarking, "Collin exemplifies the qualities of an outstanding flight instructor, consistently embodying the UND Aerospace School's mission to 'provide the highest standard of professional aviation education at a reasonable cost to the student.' His dedication to excellence, commitment to student success and passion for aviation education set him apart in every way."

Another student expressed gratitude for Fritchen's guidance, stating, "Starting with no prior knowledge of planes, I quickly gained skills and confidence under his instruction. It's remarkable how he takes on the immense responsibility of preparing students like me for stage checks, always ensuring we are ready and at our best... As my first instructor, he has set a high standard, and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from him."

Fritchen, who credits his own instructors for his success, said his experience at UND has been "outstanding." He added, "The quality of education I've received has been exceptional, and the industry connections I've made have been incredibly valuable... I'm very grateful for these opportunities and the network I've built through UND."

Looking ahead, Fritchen hopes to launch his career with regional airlines before eventually moving on to a mainline carrier, continuing his passion for aviation that has already made a lasting impact on the next generation of pilots.
