The city of Fairhope lifted its Phase III Water Conservation Ordinance on Monday, Aug. 19, after action by Fairhope Public Utilities restored the city's water supply.
The ordinance had been enacted just days earlier, on the evening of Aug. 14, following a mechanical failure at one of the city’s public utility wells.
The well's failure had initially reduced Fairhope's water capacity by approximately 1 million gallons, leaving the city operating at 9.4 million gallons. The city moved to install a temporary pump to assist in the problem. The installation proved successful, with Fairhope Public Utilities now reporting that the temporary pump is providing approximately 1 million gallons of water, bringing the city's water capacity back to normal levels.
While the water conservation ordinance has been lifted, city officials are continuing to encourage residents to conserve water by irrigating their lawns and gardens between midnight and 4 a.m.
