The City of Fairhope named Tonya Butler as its 2024 Veteran of the Year, recognizing her distinguished service in the U.S. Army and her continued commitment to supporting fellow veterans.
Butler served as a sergeant (E-5) in the U.S. Army with assignments both in the United States and Korea. Her military career included a role in the U.S. Army Band as a public affairs NCO. She also served as an NBC NCO specializing in nuclear, biological and chemical warfare, a master fitness trainer (MFT NCO) and a platoon sergeant. Her exemplary service earned her several honors, including the U.S. Army Good Conduct Medal, the United States Army Commendation Medal, the United States Army Achievement Medal and the Overseas Service Ribbon.
In addition to her military accomplishments, Butler actively participates in veterans service organizations. She serves as the public affairs officer for American Legion Post 199 and advocates for the recruitment of more women veterans. She has also established a mentorship program aimed at inspiring young girls to pursue service in their communities.
Butler instructs adaptive kayaking for injured and disabled veterans and coordinates the Gulf Coast Veterans Family Camp at Camp Grace. She uses her expertise as a medical massage therapist to provide therapeutic services, focusing on pain management and alternative therapies, including sound therapy to assist veterans dealing with PTSD, depression and anxiety.
Fairhope will celebrate its veterans with a Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, Nov. 9, starting at 10 a.m. from the Fairhope Civic Center. The parade will feature local veterans' organizations, military vehicles and performances by the Fairhope High School Band and the Daphne High School ROTC, with Butler leading the procession.
A light breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m. in the Civic Center lobby for all veterans and parade participants. The celebrations will continue on Monday, Nov. 11, at 4:45 p.m. in Henry George Park with a sunset prayer service at the Veterans Memorial, titled "Tears of Sorrow, Tears of Joy," honoring the sacrifices of veterans and reflecting on their contributions.
