FAIRHOPE — At Fairhope High School, the retelling of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a whimsical take on all the strange things love makes us do.

There is a marriage. And fairies. And the tricking of a queen. And feuding couples. Couples who fall in love. And, of course, magic.

At the center is a hilarious performance by sophomore Alex Donovan McGill who appears as Nick Bottom in the play, within the play.

The wall kissing scene is a riot. If you know your Shakespeare, you know of which we speak.

It’s not just laugh out loud funny. It’s spit liquid through your nose type of funny. It just is.

Hannah Rogers, Fairhope's theater teacher, Shakespeare's scripts give actors a creative freedom that is lacking in modern shows.

"Since it was written so long ago there aren’t many stage directions or pre-conceived notions of what the show should be like," she said. "Sometimes it says there will be a balcony on stage. Sometimes it just says exit and enter. You can set it in the 1920s if that's what you want to do. Nothing in the script disagrees with that.

"There is an availability for creativity and fun and the language is beautiful," Roger said.

The timeless humor and storylines also have a way of winning over the staunchest Shakespeare haters.

"Usually there will be a couple of students who don't care much for Shakespeare. Then they do a show, and they love it," she said.

Cast members are Lilly Norris, Meredith Bates, Carter Nist, Elaine Walker, Ava Zettle, Reuben Rockwell, Victoria Hardy, Sage Whiteman, Alex Donovan McGill, Ava Lee, Sierra Caldwell, Maggie Cummings, Leah Breivik, and Max Hill.

"A Midsummer Night's Dream" opens at Fairhope High's Blackbox Theatre on St. Patrick's Day and runs through the weekend. Tickets are available online at gofan.com.
