For the fourth year in a row, Fairhope senior Cooper Brechman made his way to the state championship podium with a top-three finish in the 1-meter dive on the Class 6A-7A stage.

Brechman became the school’s first male state medalist diver after he took bronze as a freshman, silver as a sophomore and gold as a junior. The Pirate diver finished his collection with another silver medal following a second-place spot in the AHSAA meet Nov. 22-23 in Huntsville.

Brechman’s score of 405.65 trailed only sophomore Corey Sapp from Grissom who took gold with a 408.40 score. He was joined in the event by sophomore R2 Knight who finished tied for 10th overall with a score of 250.60 to help Fairhope finish 15th in the team competition.

More Eastern Shore standouts

The Fairhope Pirate’s runner-up performance highlighted Baldwin County’s local results with four more medals returning to the Eastern Shore with two from Daphne senior Dane Goodman and one each from Bayshore Christian senior Suzanne Rainer and freshman David Rainer.

For the second-straight year, Goodman took home a pair of medals with third-place finishes in the 100-yard fly (51.22) and backstroke (51.43). The senior also represented the Trojans in the 200-yard medley relay (1:43.74 for seventh overall) and 400-yard free relay (3:28.97 for 10th overall) in the Class 6A-7A finals to help record a 10th-place finish in the team race.

From Bayshore Christian, Suzanne Rainer grabbed another bronze medal with a third-place spot in the 100-yard fly (1:02.25) after a pair of bronzes from last year. Suzanne added a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.50) on the Class 1A-5A stage to help the Eagles finish 15th in the girls’ team competition.

As only a freshman, David Rainer made the finals in two events and earned a bronze medal with a 2:04.39 in the 200-yard individual medley. He added a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.01 to help Bayshore Christian finish 17th overall in the boys’ team competition.

Spanish Fort, St. Michael add to top finishes

Two more Eastern Shore schools added to Baldwin County’s top finishes at the final meet of the year.

Spanish Fort senior Abigail Krot finished fifth in the 6A-7A 100-yard fly with a time of 58.63 to complement a seventh-place spot in the 500-yard free at 5:18.04. She was also joined by eighth-grader Hazel Geha, senior Crista Hoffman and seventh-grader Jade Geha in being part of relay teams that made the finals in the 400-yard free (4:01.47 for 13th) and the 200-yard medley (2:01.67 for 15th) to help the Toros take 13th in the team race.

A pair of St. Michael relay teams competed in the 1A-5A final heats as the 200-yard medley relay team of juniors Emma Sexton, Lillie Crooker, Sara Garlock and senior Emma Marlowe took fifth place in 2:01.76. The 200-yard free relay team of junior Addison Silvernail, Sexton, Marlowe and Garlock finished seventh in 1:51.51 to help log a 12th-place finish in the team competition.

Also in the large-school division, sophomore Grayson Peacock from Daphne logged a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:58.31 in addition to a ninth-place spot in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.62.

Spanish Fort was represented by junior Noah Greene, eighth-grader Harry Nguyen, junior Ian Poole and freshman Hayden Odam who earned fourth-place finishes in the 200-yard free relay (1:29.33) and 400-yard free relay (3:18.91) as the Toros finished eighth overall in the boys’ team competition.

More history in Bay Minette

More history was added onto in the northern end of the county as Baldwin County junior Patrick Fitzgerald represented the Tigers’ second-ever state qualifier after a pair of relay teams punched their tickets to the 2013 championships. Fitzgerald raced to a 14th-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.35.
