Members of the Alabama Elks Association are set to gather at Perdido Beach Resort from Jan. 16-18 for the organization's Mid-Winter Convention, a meeting that will feature updates on community initiatives and an address from the national president.
Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Grand Exalted Ruler Douglas A. Schiefer will speak to more than 150 members and their families during the Saturday evening session. Schiefer, a resident of Ohio, is expected to discuss the Elks' ongoing efforts to address key social issues, according to a news release.
"The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is an amazing organization that makes a difference in thousands of communities across the nation each day," Schiefer said in the release. "The work we do — whether it's providing scholarships, aiding veterans or addressing hunger and homelessness — demonstrates our Elks HEART for America."
Alabama's 22 Elks Lodges' contributions in 2024 included $400,000 in cash donations and over $2 million in volunteer service hours. A highlight was the $100,000 donation to Camp ASCCA, a facility that provides outdoor experiences for youth with special needs.
Attendees will hear reports from local Lodges and state committees on their charitable impact. The event will serve as both a celebration of past achievements and a rallying call for continued service in 2025.
The Elks, founded in 1868, have over 1 million members nationwide. Their work spans a wide range of initiatives, with local Lodges tailoring efforts to meet community needs.
