ELBERTA - Elberta came out and showed some Homecoming spirit on Thur., Oct. 17 when the large parade rolled through the streets of town. Over 35 entries signed up to participate in the parade, coming from all over the surrounding area to join Elberta High prior to the Sat. night football game against St. Luke’s.
“We’ve got people coming from everywhere,” said councilmember Vicky Norris. “We’ve got police and fire departments from surrounding communities, MedStar has signed up to come- we’re so excited to put on a true Homecoming Parade.” Organizations from Elberta, Summerdale, Perdido Beach, and Josephine participated in the event.
The parade marked the first time a new route was utilized for such events, and the size marked a good occasion for the council to see how well it worked out. The citizens seemed to enjoy it, lining the streets and cheering on the schools and first responders.
“I think it’s awesome to have a Homecoming Parade for the communities,” said Mayor Jim Hamby. “All the kids from the surrounding towns attend our schools, so it’s all of our parade, together. It’s great to see all the communities coming out to support this event.”
