Dog Days of Summer to combine adoptions, patriotism and support for veterans

Posted

Dogs, veterans and live music will take center stage Saturday, June 7 during the first annual Dog Days of Summer at American Legion Post 99 in Foley.

The free event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2101 S. McKenzie St., aims to raise awareness for animal rescues and provide valuable resources for veterans. Hosted by the Beach Dog Pound of the Military Order of the Devil Dogs and supported by American Legion Post 99, the family-friendly festival will include dog adoptions, demonstrations, food, music and more.

Dozens of adoptable dogs from Wags and Whiskers Rescue will be on site looking for their "FurEver" homes. Organizers encourage guests to bring their own dogs on 6-foot leashes and ensure they are up to date on vaccinations.

A crowd favorite is expected to be the Patriotic Pet Parade, which starts at 2 p.m. Participants can sign up at https://alpost99.org/dogdays.

Canine demonstrations will feature the Foley and Gulf Shores police departments along with trainer David Jones of Southern K9. Alabama Service Dogs will offer service dog demonstrations and help match trained dogs with veterans in need.

Live entertainment will be provided by the Doc Johnson Band. Food and drinks will be available from American Legion Post 99 throughout the day, with additional support from local businesses including Culver's and Wild for Waffles.

Veterans can visit booths hosted by the Marine Corps League and American Legion to learn about benefits, membership opportunities and support services.

Vendor booths and business sponsorships are still available. Those interested can find more information, including applications and event details, at https://alpost99.org/dogdays or contact elyseevents7@gmail.com.
