ALABASTER — The Daphne High School Lady Trojan wrestling team has claimed back-to-back state championships, winning the 2022 Alabama Girls State Wrestling Tournament Saturday, Jan. 22 at Thompson High School.
The Lady Trojans claimed the title with a total of 140 points, topping Sparkman High, which finished second with 127 points and host Thompson, finishing in third with 113 points.
Daphne's Kalyse Hill (134 pounds), Sage Rosario (154 pounds) and Kaylee Holder (167 pounds), claimed state titles, while Alanah Girard (102 pounds), finished as runner-up with La'Nia Riley (102 pounds) and Kimber Alford (140 pounds) finishing third.
Baldwin County High School's Tamara Reed also claimed a state title in the 237-pound category. Elberta's Maya Curp brought home a runner-up title in the 187-pound weight class, Gulf Shores' Rhyleah Gleber (128 pounds) finished third and Foley's Hailey Gentry (102 pounds) brought home a fourth-place finish.
A total of 41 schools from across the state brought girls teams to compete for individual and team championships. Also included were athletes from Orange Beach and Robertsdale.

This is the second year for this event in Alabama. Girls' wrestling is not an AHSAA-sanctioned sport.
In February, AHSAA member schools will vote to sanction wrestling for girls. If the vote passes, there will be an official AHSAA sanctioned state tournament in 2023. Currently 35 states have sanctioned girls' wrestling.

109 pounds: Mariah Jones, first place, Central; Jaiden Melendez, second, Piedmont; Madilyn Rodgers, third, Arab; Lynleigh Weltzin, fourth, Thompson.

116 pounds: Evelyn Holmes-Smith, first place, Enterprise; Carlie Tait, second, W.S. Neal; Maggie Whitaker, third, Arab; Kloe Robb, fourth, Sparkman.
