Daphne City Council approves $6.2 million contract for Justice Center expansion

Posted

Daphne – Daphne City Council has approved a $6.2 million building contract to expand the Daphne Justice Center. The project, awarded to Persons Services Corporation, is part of a broader initiative funded by a bond issue passed in November 2023.

The approved contract encompasses a $5.7 million construction bid, $140,000 in engineering costs and a contingency fund of $285,114. The original plans included a new courtroom addition to the existing courthouse but building costs came in over budget. The courtroom addition will be reworked and put out for bid again at a later date.

  • Key features of the Justice Center expansion include:
New Police Precinct Facility: The centerpiece of the project, this facility will enhance the operational capacity of the Daphne Police Department. It will offer new workspace, an evidence room, showers and other amenities to support patrol officers.
  • Improved Infostructure: The project also includes the construction of new drive access and additional parking, aiming to improve accessibility and convenience for both law enforcement personnel and the public.

The jail's capacity will remain unchanged.

The funding for this project stems from the bond issue approved in November 2023, which also allocated resources for the construction of the new animal shelter which is underway.

Construction is expected to last approximately one year.
