DAPHNE – Planned infrastructure improvements in Daphne will include 46 paving projects and extended sidewalks in Lake Forest, according to resolutions approved by the City Council.

The council voted Monday, Nov. 1 to award bids for the projects.

The company of C. Thornton Inc. was the low bidder to build the sidewalk extension on Ridgewood Drive in Lake Forest. The bid was $144,465.25. With the cost of engineering, surveys and design as well as testing and other costs, the total price of the project is $192,599.45.

Councilman Ron Scott said costs have increased in recent years.

“It’s just amazing what inflation has done,” Scott said. “Historically, we said we could get a mile of sidewalk for $100,000. Now, we’re getting a quarter mile for $144,000.”

The council also awarded the bid to resurface roads during the 2022 fiscal year. Bay Area Contracting was the lowest bidder with a submission of $986,919.20.

The bid includes paving 46 roads in the city in the upcoming year. The most expensive single project was $80,248 to mill and pave College Avenue from Main Street to Captain O’Neal Drive. The least expensive project on the list was milling and paving Oxford Circle at a cost of $5,433.

The bid also includes 400 tons of leveling at a total cost of $38,000, painting eight miles of white and yellow traffic stripes at a total cost of $30,192 and other work.
