County Commission chair to change Tuesday

Posted

FAIRHOPE – Baldwin County commissioners will have a new chairman and new committee assignments beginning Tuesday, Nov. 2.

Each November, the commission rotates the chair positions for the commission and committees.

Commissioner Jeb Ball will become chairman, replacing Commissioner Joe Davis. Davis will become chairman of the Road and Bridge Division.

Ball, who has been vice chairman for the last year, thanked Davis for his work leading the commission at the group’s Oct. 19 meeting.

“I appreciate you, Commissioner Davis, you’ve been kind of like pulling me under your wing this whole time and training me, trying to train me to become a chairman,” Ball said. “We’ve done a lot of things together and I appreciate your leadership and I’ve learned a lot from you over the past year. It’s amazing how fast this stuff goes by when we’re doing our jobs.”

Ball said one accomplishment of the commission under Davis’s direction was the decision to move some meetings from Bay Minette to the Fairhope Satellite Courthouse. The commission added a meeting space on the second floor of the Fairhope building when the structure was remodeled.

He said that while the change will require him to drive from his home in Bay Minette, the change will make meetings more convenient for some residents.

Davis praised the work done by other commissioners and the county staff during his term as chairman.

“This is, without a doubt, in my mind the finest group I’ve ever worked with, top to bottom and it is because those of us up here help you with policy and providing you the resources,” Davis said. “You department heads are the ones who get the jobs done.”

The commission holds regular meetings on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. The meeting on the second Tuesday will continue to be in Bay Minette. The meeting on the fourth Tuesday will be in Fairhope.

In November, Commissioner Billie Jo Underwood will become chairwoman of the Industry and Civic Division. Commissioner Charles “Skip” Gruber will become commission vice-chairman and chairman of the Finance and Taxation Division.
