Hurricane Sally left a path of destruction across the Gulf Coast from Dauphin Islander to Pensacola. Her wrath ranged from flooded homes, downed old growth trees, missing roofs, displaced vessels and snapped power poles. While those affected woke up and began the cleanup process, an organization in Ocean Springs started packing coolers.
Comeback Coolers is an organization based in Ocean Springs, Miss., with a simple mission: deliver a much needed and deserved break to those who have been in the path of a natural disaster. The group delivers ice-packed coolers with drinks, beer, fruit, snacks and wet wipes to storm-ridden areas.
A post on the group’s Facebook page gives a glimpse into what they encounter. “Every mission is different. Every mission is the same. We meet people who are going through difficult times. Sometimes they are questioning themselves, sometimes they are questioning the cleanup, sometimes they are questioning God. Every time they are working to keep it together, every time they are thinking of others, every time they are moving forward.”
The coolers are decorated by families, school children and individuals with messages of encouragement and artwork. Coolers specifically for children and nonalcoholic coolers for adults are also delivered. The group prepared and delivered over 369 Comeback Coolers to Hurricane Sally survivors in Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, Pensacola and Dauphin Island.
Orange Beach resident and Comeback Cooler recipient Rebecca Wilson commented, “Thank you so much. This whole experience has been overwhelming and your generosity and kindness was so appreciated.”
If you would like to sponsor a cooler or make a monetary donation for gas, ice or travel expenses, please consider donating via the group’s PayPal (comebackcoolers@gmail.com). One adult cooler with beer costs about $100 to supply, pack and deliver.
