The newest 60-meter record holder for the Coast Guard Academy indoor track program hails from Fairhope, Alabama and plays running back for the Bears’ football team: Glenn Patrick.
With a 7.04 at the Springfield College Triangle Classic in Massachusetts on Feb. 22, the former Pirate broke a 14-year-old record previously held by Tiernan Bonner at 7.11 from 2011. Patrick actually beat the mark twice with a 7.08 in the preliminary round only to better his time in the finals which secured a third-place finish.
In the first four meets of the season, Patrick has bettered his 60-meter dash time each time out and climbed up the Coast Guard Academy’s all-time leaderboard. The junior sprinter started with a 7.32 at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener at Boston University on Dec. 7, 2024, then recorded a 7.19 at the Riverhawk Invitational on Jan. 24 before he ran a 7.15 at the Tufts Stampede Open on Feb. 15.
Patrick also etched his name in the Bears’ record book for the 55-meter dash this season with a 6.62 at the CGA Bear Invite on Feb. 7 which put him third all-time only a tenth of a second behind Bonner’s record of 6.52 from 2010. Both his 55- and 60-meter dash times were the best marks run by a Bear sprinter this season.
His 55-meter dash time was also good enough for a personal best, as was a 23.56 in the 200-meter dash at the Riverhawk Invitational. Patrick’s previous best 200-dash time came at BU’s David Hemery Valentine Invitational with a 23.67 on Feb. 9.
Sophomore Ian Naff joined Patrick in setting Coast Guard Academy records early in the season when he took down a 44-year-old record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.31 at BU’s John Thomas Terrier Classic on Jan. 31, which topped Kurt Colella’s mark of 48.72 from 1981. Naff also broke a nine-year-old record in the 200-meter dash with a 21.93 at the same meet to top Jacob Pawlina’s mark of 22.06 from 2016.
The Bears move onto the postseason with the New England Division III Indoor Championships next up on the schedule this weekend at the TRACK at New Balance headquarters in Boston. Qualifiers will move on to the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association Indoor Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston scheduled for the following weekend, March 7 and 8, with NCAA DIII Indoor Nationals set for March 14 and 15 at Nazareth College in New York.
