DAPHNE — In "Guy's Grocery Games" on Food Network, some may have recognized local restaurateur "Panini Pete" Blohme as he competed in the latest episode that aired last Wednesday night.
Blohme's portfolio includes the titular Panini Pete's in Fairhope, as well as several other establishments in Baldwin County and along the coast, such as The Waterfront in Daphne. He also runs Squid Ink Eclectic Eats & Drinks and even a hair salon, Mob Town Proper, in Mobile.
Blohme is no stranger to Guy Fieri, as he is a favorite of the television personality and chef, having appeared on his shows several times in the past, including arguably his most famous show "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives."
Last Wednesday, Blohme made his most recent appearance on Fieri's cooking shows in last week's episode of "Guy's Grocery Games." To mark the occasion, Blohme and the staff at the Waterfront in Daphne hosted a watch party, with Blohme conversing with patrons about his experience on set and giving somewhat of a play-by-play analysis as the episode aired.
"I still got it," Blohme quipped to one of his patrons at the bar. "For an old guy, I still move pretty good."
Filmed last year in Santa Rosa, California, according to Food Network's summary of the episode, "three of Guy Fieri's favorite DDD ["Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives"] chefs and three of the hottest GGG winners compete tag-team style in 10-minute shifts to create a winner's pork dinner. The first shift chef shops for a favorite snack food and piece of equipment selected by a roll of the culinary dice. After each shift, the chefs are given a shot at non-verbal communication by acting out charades or holding up random food props."
On Team DDD with Blohme was Jeffrey "Stretch" Rumaner and Arizona chef John Conley, all of whom have previously appeared on Fieri's shows. They are also all members of the Messlords, a collective of celebrity chefs dedicated to supporting U.S. military troops.
In the end, Team DDD would prevail, winning a prize of $15,000, which was split among the three. Blohme said his share of the money went directly to his charity, the PR Foundation, which is dedicated to causes including honoring military veterans, no-kill animal shelters and helping people with special needs.
