Celebrate Make Music Day in Gulf Shores

GULF SHORES — Fête de la Musique or Make Music Day is an annual music celebration that takes place around the globe annually on June 21. This year, celebrate the day in Gulf Shores.

The city of Gulf Shores has planned a variety of free events to celebrate Make Music Day and the summer solstice. The day is meant to bring together people of all ages and skill levels to make music on the longest day of the year.

"We're excited to bring this international day of music-making to Gulf Shores and encourage everyone to find their inner musician," said Grant Brown, recreation and cultural affairs director. "Make Music Day is one way we focus on the importance of the arts and culture in our community."

The city of Gulf Shores will celebrate Make Music Day with the following events:

Live Music at the Bodenhamer Recreation Center

  • What: The Recreation Department will host the ultimate jam session featuring Smokey Otis and Chicago Bob. The performance will be held in the lobby.
  • When: June 21, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Where: Bodenhamer Recreation Center, 310 W. 19th Ave., Gulf Shores

Make Music at the museum

  • What: The Gulf Shores Museum will host local musician and instructor Ho Billups for a live performance. Following the performance, attendees are invited to create their own music using guitars they've made themselves at the museum. All materials needed will be provided.
  • When: June 21, from 2 to 4 p.m.
  • Where: Gulf Shores Museum, 244 W. 19th Ave., Gulf Shores

Make Music at Meyer Park

  • What: The Gulf Shores Special Events Team is partnering with the Frank Brown Songwriters and the Flora-Bama to present Make Music at Meyer Park. Enjoy musical performances featuring Rhonda Hart and Smokey Otis. Want to join in? Attendees are encouraged to participate in the musical action with egg shakers and tambourines provided. Sassy Bass will be present giving away two ukuleles and food trucks will be on site.
  • When: June 21, from 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Where: Meyer Park, 400 E. 22nd Ave., Gulf Shores
