Canal Road to temporarily close for bridge girder installation

Posted

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) continues to make steady progress on the new Intracoastal Waterway Bridge project in Gulf Shores.

To safely set steel bridge girders over Canal Road, the contractor, Scott Bridge Company, will close a portion of the road for three days beginning Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

Here’s what motorists need to know:
  • Canal Road will be closed beginning at 6 a.m. June 24 and will remain closed until 6 p.m. on June 26.
  • The closure will allow crews to safely place large bridge girders over the roadway.
  • Detour signs will direct drivers to use County Road 4 (Cotton Creek Drive) as an alternate route.

This work marks another key step toward completing the Intracoastal Waterway Bridge. Once finished, the project will:

  • Reduce congestion on SR-59.
  • Improve access to emergency services for Gulf Shores and surrounding areas.
  • Enhance safety during evacuations, especially during hurricanes or other emergencies.
  • Support economic growth by improving connectivity and transportation efficiency.

ALDOT and Scott Bridge Company appreciate the public’s patience and understanding during this necessary roadwork.
