Despite a step up in classification due to the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Competitive Balance Factor, both Bayshore Christian cross country teams didn’t miss a beat and captured a fifth-straight Section 1 championship.
Caden Phillippi won the boys’ race with a time of 15:59.09 and Kat Hart finished second in 20:39.49 to pace the Eagles on the Class 4A stage.
Jonah Elliott (17:16.27 for 2nd) and Joseph Lovelady (17:26.45 for 3rd) helped the Bayshore Christian boys’ team sweep the top three spots. The Eagles registered six more top-20 finishes to beat St. Michael in the team standings by 56 points.
Allie McTaggart (20:51.22 for 4th) was not far behind Hart to help the Eagle girls’ squad add five more top 20 finishes behind their leading finishers for a 30-point advantage over second-place Houston Academy.
Fargason wins individual crown in Bayside’s arrival to 6A
Also in a new classification, Bayside Academy stepped up to Class 6A and made a similar splash in the girls’ race where Shelby Fargason captured an individual title in 19:10.29. Annie Midyett (19:58.51 for 3rd) and Avery Therrell (20:45.67 for 4th) joined her in the top five as the Admirals missed out on the team championship by only one point to Saraland.
Both Cardinal teams punch state tickets
The Cardinals from St. Michael were not far behind Bayshore Christian in Class 4A where Oliver Hemby used a time of 17:42.41 for sixth place individually to lead the boys’ team. Luke Johannesmann joined him in the top 20 in 12th overall in addition to four more top 30 finishers.
The girls’ squad from St. Michael also qualified for state as a team with a third-place finish thanks in part to Emily Friedel’s eighth-place spot in 21:47.70. All five of her teammates registered top 35 finishes to extend their postseason.
Girls’ teams from Pirates, Golden Bears log top-three finishes
The Fairhope Pirates also returned with a runner-up finish in the Class 7A Section 1 girls’ team championship. Led by consecutive finishers Lynley Grace Anderson (20:11.06 for second) and Mariah Ruff (20:31.35 for third), Fairhope had six additional top 30 placers.
The Robertsdale Golden Bears were not far behind the Pirates in Class 7A where Laila Cooper (21:42.50 for 7th) and Makenzie Webb (21:44.98 for 8th) led the way for a third-place spot. Robertsdale earned two more top-30 finishes to help the girls’ team punch their ticket to the state championship.
