Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge provides update on access improvements

Posted

Visitors to Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge may soon have more convenient access to pristine beaches as the Mobile Street Parking Lot is expected to reopen by early September, according to the refuge's latest update.

While the exact date is yet to be confirmed, officials are optimistic about restoring this access point soon.

However, the reopening of the Mobile Street Boardwalk, a popular route for visitors, faces delays due to ongoing supply chain issues that have slowed construction. As a result, the refuge has kept a temporary sandy beach access open just west of the new boardwalk's construction site. This access has only been closed for a few days when heavy equipment was in operation nearby.

It is important to note that there is currently no available parking until the Mobile Street Parking Lot is back in service. Visitors are advised to arrange for drop-offs or walk to the temporary beach access point.

"We understand the frustration with the timing," the refuge said in a Facebook post. "Unfortunately, due to safety concerns with the existing boardwalk and having to operate within our contracting processes, we needed to move forward now with the replacement."
