Bodenhamer Recreation Center renovation budget increases

The David L. Bodenhamer Recreation Center lobby renovation uncovered a few issues that require  an increase to the renovation budget.

In May 2021 the Gulf Shores City Council adopted a resolution awarding The Green-Simmons Company, Inc. the contract for the Bodenhamer Center lobby renovation. The contract was awarded in an amount not to exceed $255,000.

The renovation will include:

  • Demolition and removal of the reception desk and retail center
  • Construction of an interior wall around a new cardio equipment area
  • Removal of existing ceramic and vinyl tile flooring, replaced with new laminated vinyl flooring
  • New doors and storefront systems
  • Modified HVAC ducting for the new layout
  • Modified and new electrical receptacles, data lines, coax cabling and saw-cutting the existing slab as required for the new cardio and fitness areas to provide power and data to equipment
  • New light fixtures
  • Painting all walls
  • Installation of a new reception desk by the main entrance
  • Construction of new retail location for City Store merchandise
  • Construction of a new coffee bar with cabinetry and casework

During the Oct. 4 City Council work session, City Engineer Mark Acreman explained to the council that two issues came to light during construction necessitating a $29,500 change order.

“The first issue is there is a lot of additional electrical work needed to supply ground power to the 12 cardio equipment areas. We had to saw cut through the slab, run conduit through the slab and pour over them so the cardio units could be connected to a power source and not create a trip hazard. That also required some additional work to be done on the wall itself and distribution panel,” Acreman said.

Acreman said the second item was a flooring upgrade that is longer lasting than the product originally called for in the contract.

The change order will be funded from the existing $702,000 budgeted in the Recreation Impact Fees account. Several projects came in under their projected expense leaving $48,000 that will be used to cover the change order.

The City Council voted unanimously to pass a resolution authorizing a change order in the amount not to exceed $29,500 to the contract between the city of Gulf Shores and The Green Simmons Company, Inc.

During the regular session, the council:

  • Approved a public assembly permit for the Gulf Coast Regional Volleyball Association Beach Series.
  • Approved a public assembly permit for Spring Hill College’s Fall Collegiate Beach Volleyball Tournament Oct. 30 on the Gulf Shores Public Beach near West Gulf Place.
  • Passed a resolution appointing Marcy Kichler to the Personnel Board to replace Nora Mandoki for a full term of three years ending March 27, 2024.
