Bobby E. Smith, a former Marine, educator, author, and visionary businessman, peacefully passed away at the age of 88 on Dec. 14, 2023. Bobby's journey began as a teacher and mathematics professor after his service in the Marines. His passion for education led him to co-author a book on calculus before venturing into information systems management. His entrepreneurial spirit ultimately led him to the realm of healthcare technology, where he founded the SSI Group. Serving as its President and CEO for 24 years until his retirement in 2012, Bobby's transformative vision turned SSI into a nationally recognized healthcare software leader, processing over $700 billion in electronic claims annually. His legacy is one of dedication, service, and innovation.

Despite his numerous professional achievements, Bobby's greatest joy was found in his family. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 54 years, Barbara; daughter Shelley Case (Tim Crabtree); two sons, Brandon (Heather) and Barrett (Michelle); and beloved family addition, Lonnell Freeman Battle. His legacy further lives on through his cherished grandchildren: Chandler Case, Blake Smith, Brock Smith, Sawyer Smith, and granddaughter Carson Smith.

Bobby's enduring influence extends beyond his contributions to education and business. He will be fondly remembered for the lasting impact he had on the lives of those fortunate enough to know him.  His memory will forever be cherished by family, friends, and colleagues alike.

A memorial visitation to celebrate Bobby’s extraordinary life was held at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Fairhope on Dec. 19, 2023, from 6 pm to 7 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends and well-wishers consider making a donation to the American Heart Association in Bobby’s honor. Contributions can be made online at www.heart.org. Your generosity will help advance a cause that was dear to Bobby.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming love and support they have received during this challenging time.
