Bayside Academy’s Magli steals show at Singing for Scholarships

This year’s Singing for Scholarships event awarded more money to participants thanks to new sponsors and a change in venue.

After the cancellation of the Annual National Shrimp Festival, the traditional home of the singing competition, organizers moved the event to Orange Beach’s Freedom Fest, held the same weekend as the cancelled shrimp festival.

The move attracted more sponsors and additional cash prizes of $200 were awarded for best dance moves, best high note, best low note, most unusual song, best smile, fashionista and a spirit award.

This year’s competition featured 11 competitors from high schools across Baldwin County. The first-place winner of a $1,500 scholarship was Genevieve Magli of Bayside Academy.

Second place and $600 scholarship went to Anne Elise Sherrod of Bayshore Christian School. Third place and a $300 scholarship went to Luiza Salazar of Orange Beach High School. The music program at each of the winner’s schools will also receive a matching cash prize.

Other participants included: Laila Stoevsand of Robertsdale High School, Alex Lewis of Baldwin County Virtual School, Jessica Hairelson of Snook Academy, Shaylee Miller of Foley High School, Tucker Wilson of Spanish Fort High School, Shawnique Chess of Daphne High School, Anna O’Neal of Gulf Shores High School, and David Reid of Elberta High School.

Singing for scholarships event was created in 2013 to support Baldwin County High Schools and the talented youth in the region. The singing competition features students chosen to represent their high school. Each high school conducts its own contest to pick a competitor. Opportunities are also available for private school and home-school students.
