When MaxPreps revealed its list of the top 100 greatest high school sports coaches of all-time list, Alabama’s lone representative has led a program on the Eastern Shore of Baldwin County since 1987.
Ann Schilling, head volleyball coach of the Bayside Academy Admirals, was ranked No. 17 overall and the highest out of seven volleyball coaches on the list.
Over 34 years, she had led her team to the playoffs every year where they’ve collected 28 state championships and set the national record for consecutive titles at 21. Bayside Academy is the only team in the history of the Alabama High School Athletic Association to win championships in Class 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A.
Check-in on the Admirals
This week, the Admirals opened Class 7A Region 1 play with a sweep of Foley before adding a non-region win over Baker to improve to 15-5 overall. Bayside Academy was ranked No. 10 in MaxPreps’ state rankings as of Thursday with a rating of 22.95 and a 15.1 strength of schedule.

More on the top 100 coaches of all-time
MaxPreps’ list featured coaches of team sports who had been leading high school squads for at least 30 years.
“The algorithm includes data regarding the coach's all-time wins, number of years coached, average wins per year, state championships, national championships, winning percentage and average number of state championships per year,” wrote Kevin Askeland. “The algorithm puts a premium on longevity, consistency and dominance.”
Other volleyball coaches on the list hailed from Tennessee, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Florida with three in the top 50 and three more in the top 90 overall.
Steven Shondell from Indiana’s Muncie Burris (21 state titles and 1 national championship over 34 years) at No. 46 and Rone Kordes from Kentucky’s Assumption (23 state titles and 1 national championship over 35 years) at No. 50 were the only others on the list to join Schilling with more than 20 state championships.
