Bay Minette's Starla Chapman's MasterChef Junior journey ends

Starla Chapman's "MasterChef Junior" journey has ended.

The Bay Minette native left the show on episode seven, which aired Thursday, April 28, after judges Gordon Ramsay, Daphne Oz and Aaron Sanchez felt Starla's black eye pea relish was the weakest dish on her team. While her "MasterChef Junior" journey did not end with the $100,000 cash prize, Chapman and her family continue to work toward attaining her goal of owning a food truck.

Chapman's final episode took place at a monster truck and motocross rally in the desert. The 10 remaining chefs were split into two teams chosen by team captains Abir and Mollie. Chapman was chosen last by Abir for the Blue Team. After the teams were chosen, the captains were told to switch teams leaving the Blue Team with Mollie as captain.

The challenge was to create a corn dog appetizer with unique dipping sauce and a hearty meal for 51 monster truck and motocross drivers. The Blue Team captain Mollie decided on a menu of veal chop with Brussels sprouts and black-eyed pea relish. The Red Team captain Abir decided on a menu of steak, mashed red potatoes and a roasted corn salsa.

Both teams struggled to cook the proteins properly and get their side dishes seasoned. The corn dog appetizers were less of a challenge and were ready on time and enjoyed by all.

On the Red Team, Abir and A'Dan were having a power struggle, and no one was working together as a team. The Blue Team on the other hand worked well together but the young team had a challenging time getting things right. Ivi and Cruz experienced many issues getting 51 portions of Brussels sprouts roasted on the stove top.

In the end, the teams were able to get all 51 portions plated but the Red Team was slow to get the steaks done. The judges had to step in and take control of the Red Team. The 51 guests cast votes to determine which team had the best meal. The Blue Team's menu choices seemed to be what put them on the bottom. Many of the diners said they did not like Brussels sprouts or black-eyed peas and the poor cook on both did not help.

The judges conferred and determined Chapman would be going home to Bay Minette. As tears streamed down her face, Chapman said goodbye and climbed into the firetruck monster truck and rode away in a cloud of dust.

Gulf Coast Media caught up with Chapman at Coastal Bay Nutrition on Friday, April 29 to chat about what it was like to leave the show, rewatch it three years later and what is next for the 13-year-old.

Chapman said it was awkward and a little weird to relive the moment she was eliminated from "MasterChef Junior" three years ago. During the filming of the episode the teams did not see each other at all or know what they were doing. She didn't even realize her teammates Ivi and Cruz were struggling until watching the episode.

"During the challenge I was in my own space, so I didn't even notice that Ivi and Cruz were having a problem cooking their Brussels sprouts. I am glad I didn't know they were having problems because then it would have gotten my hopes up," Chapman said.

The black-eyed pea relish was a dish Chapman was assigned by team captain Mollie and if given her choice she would have made something different, she said. The dish had two main ingredients that she personally does not like: bell peppers and black-eyed peas. She gave a little insight into the dynamics of the team challenges on the show.

"I think a lot of the time when we did team challenges it was mostly the team captains saying, 'We are going to make this,' and everyone has to agree. If someone doesn't agree they are going to look like A'Dan is portrayed to be and have an opinion and there will be an argument. You had to agree, or you are going to look like the bad guy," Chapman said.

If given a chance to travel back to that moment, Chapman said she would have spoken up and pushed to make mashed potatoes because of their versatility and being easier to cook in a bigger portion.

Watching the episode gave Chapman a chance to see how the Red Team struggled to work together as a team.

"We didn't get to see the other team at all. It was surprising to see they made A'Dan out to be the bad guy which he isn't at all. The way they are putting it out there portrays him as the bad guy. It was shocking to see how poorly the Red Team worked together too," Chapman said.

Chapman said she knew before the judges said anything that she would be the one going home.

"Even before the judges said it, I could tell it was me. Cruz and Ivi were working together, and I was working by myself. It wouldn't have been fair to eliminate one of them. Grayson and Mollie were on the grill and did fairly good. That is why I was crying even before we got on camera. I knew it was coming so when it happened it wasn't as bad," Chapman said.

Now that her "MasterChef Junior" journey has ended Chapman and her family continue to work toward her goal of owning a food truck and continuing her cooking journey. A GoFundMe page has been launched to raise money for her Cook Up a Cure efforts and for the purchase of a food truck. As for summer plans, Chapman has a full slate.

"I have the cooking camps in June, a drink at Coastal Bay Nutrition and my mom is working on booking more cooking camp dates. I am also planning to volunteer at the Alabama State Veterans home," Chapman said.
