Bay Minette Police Department hosts youth for transformative hunting program

Posted

The Bay Minette Police Department recently wrapped up its fourth-annual Hour-Glass Youth Deer Hunt, a program designed to provide life skills training, outdoor experiences and mentorship for youth aged 13-17.

The three-day event, held under the supervision of trained law enforcement officers, civilians and school administrators, focused on firearm safety, hunting techniques and wildlife observation. Fifteen students participated this year, with all expenses — covering attire, ammunition and provisions — funded by corporate and private donations. Each participant was paired with an adult mentor.

The event culminated in a majority of participants harvesting their first deer from fixed hunting blinds, marking a milestone in their outdoor education.

"Impressively, 11 of the 15 participants achieved their first successful deer harvest, making the experience not only memorable but deeply rewarding for both the students and their dedicated mentors," Bay Minette Police Chief Al Tolbert said. "We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed their time, resources and support to make this event a success. Programs like these strengthen our community and inspire our youth to grow into responsible, confident individuals."

A diverse team of mentors guided the young participants, including members of law enforcement, school staff and community volunteers. Among the mentors were Tolbert, Lt. Kendrick Banks, Sgt. Jeff Weaver, Sgt. Justin Kelly, Cpl. Paul Adams and School Resource Officer Alston Allen from the Bay Minette Police Department. Additional support came from the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and Baldwin County High School administrators and coaches, along with community members Quentin Richardson, Freddie Stewart and Jonathan Norris.

Beyond the hunt, the police department also spread holiday cheer through its annual Shop with a Cop program. This initiative, funded by donations, enabled school resource officers, patrol squads, investigators, dispatchers and other department staff to take 30 children shopping at Walmart.
