The Kiwanis Club of Bay Minette honored two Baldwin County High School seniors with $500 scholarships, recognizing their dedication to community service and academic excellence.
Kam Drinkard and Andi McKissack received the Bruce & Susan Lovett Community Service Scholarship, named in honor of the couple who played a key role in reviving the local Kiwanis chapter and guiding it through its early years.
Both students will attend Auburn University this fall. McKissack plans to major in drug and biopharmaceutical sciences while Drinkard will pursue a degree in business administration with a concentration in management.
Applicants for the scholarship were required to submit a personal resume, letters of recommendation and an essay on the topic “What Community Service Means to Me.” In her essay, McKissack wrote about the power of serving with compassion and purpose, while Drinkard emphasized the many forms service can take, from cleaning parks to assisting the elderly.
McKissack, daughter of Amber and Jeremy McKissack, has maintained a 4.32 GPA and is active in a wide range of extracurriculars. She is a member of Future Farmers of America and has held several leadership positions within the organization. She also serves as a Junior Ambassador with the North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce and is involved with Balcoala yearbook staff, Diamond Darlings, Friends of Exceptional Children, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honor Society and Key Club. McKissack also played volleyball, sporting clays, tennis, bowling and softball during her time at BCHS.
Drinkard, son of Brandon and Brooke Drinkard, holds a 4.29 GPA and is a leader in multiple school and community groups. He is an officer for Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a member of National Honor Society. He served as team captain and starting catcher for the BCHS baseball team and was voted Mr. BCHS and Most School Spirit by his classmates. Drinkard is also a member of the Student Leadership Team at Crossroads Church and volunteers regularly, including at baseball camps and events supporting local senior citizens.
The Kiwanis Club of Bay Minette meets at Street’s Restaurant at 5:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. New members are welcome.
