Bay Minette City Council recently honored several members of the Bay Minette Fire Department for their response to a chaotic multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 65 on July 9.

The accident, a chain-reaction event involving 20 vehicles in five separate collisions, left two people in critical condition and 11 others with minor injuries. According to a news release, the firefighters quickly sprang to action, demonstrating their skill and dedication under pressure.

They were recognized with Meritorious Service Awards, highlighting their efforts that extended far beyond the department's usual service area. On the scene, the team performed complex vehicle extractions, set up a rope rescue operation, provided medical treatment and coordinated a boat transport to meet ambulance crews.

In presenting the awards, council praised the firefighters for their professionalism and compassion, noting that their actions provided a calming and reassuring presence to those affected by the crash. The commendation highlighted that the team's response "far exceeds the call of duty and the expectations of the mayor and city council."

Fire Chief Mike Minchew, Capt. Chris Phillippi, Capt. Bobby Dolan, Lt. Christian Hall, Firefighter Nathaniel Bergman, Firefighter Tregon Greenwood and Firefighter Jordan Park were among those honored.
