The Baldwin Pops Band, under the direction of Dr. Jason Rinehart, has announced two John Allen Memorial Scholarship concerts in February. The first concert will take place on Sunday, Feb. 13 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Orange Beach Event Center (4671 Wharf Pkwy W., Orange Beach). The second concert is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 19 beginning at 7 p.m. at L.D. Owen Performing Arts Center at Coastal Alabama Community College (1900 US Highway 31 S, Bay Minette).
High school seniors from Baldwin County who plan to continue their musical involvement in college are eligible to enter The Baldwin Pops Band annual scholarship contest. All Baldwin County high schools band directors are encouraged to nominate students to perform with the band and compete for scholarships. Scholarship winners will be announced at the second concert.

John Allen was the oldest member of the Baldwin Pops when he passed away at the age of 80 in April 2003. His career playing tuba began at the age of 74 in the sixth-grade band at Fairhope Middle School. He progressed with his band class to the seventh and finally eighth grade bands. He continued playing with the eighth-grade band until his death. Allen became a charter member of the Baldwin Pops Band when it formed in 1997. The scholarship fund was named in his memory.
