Seniors from around Baldwin County recently performed with the Baldwin Pops, competing for the John Allen Memorial Scholarship. These seniors were nominated by their band directors to perform with the band during concerts in Orange Beach and Bay Minette.
The three winners of the 2022 John Allen Memorial Scholarship were Dominic Luthje of Spanish Fort High School, Oboe, First Place; Emily Kilgore of Baldwin County Virtual School, Clarinet, Second Place; and Morgan Christopher of Fairhope High School, Euphonium, Third Place. French Horn player Brooke Sterling of Robertsdale High School received an honorable mention.
Other participating seniors were Grant Ewing, Percussion, Robertsdale High School; Trinity Mays, Flute, Robertsdale High School; Jackson Peters, Euphonium, Robertsdale High School; and Daisha Taylor, Clarinet, Robertsdale High School.
John Allen was the oldest member of the Baldwin Pops when he passed away in April 2003 at the age of 80. He began playing tuba at the age of 74 in the 6th grade band at Fairhope Middle School, and progressed with the band class to the 7th and 8th grades. He continued playing with the 8th grade band until his death.
Allen was a charter member of the Baldwin Pops when it formed in 1997. The scholarship fund was named in his memory in 2004, and it has been awarded annually since its inception.
Donations for the John Allen Memorial Scholarship can be made at any Baldwin Pops concert or by mail to: Baldwin Pops Band, P.O. Box 38, Fairhope, AL 36533.
