Baldwin County is preparing to commemorate the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with its 38th-annual celebration that brings together residents to reflect on the civil rights leader's enduring impact.
The festivities begin Sunday, Jan. 19, with a memorial church program at MorningStar Baptist Church, 801 E. Jefferson Ave. in Foley. The service, set for 6 p.m., will feature keynote speaker Percy Jenkins, loan officer at Commonwealth National Bank in Mobile. Foley City Councilwoman Vera Quaites will serve as chairperson for the program. MorningStar Baptist Church's pastor the Rev. Bennie Richardson will host the event.
On Monday, Jan. 20, the celebration continues with the annual memorial march, starting at 10 a.m. at Kids Park, 303 McMillian Ave. in Bay Minette. Marchers will make their way to the John F. Rhodes Civic Center, 301 D'Olive St., for an after-march program that will highlight messages from local clergy, including the Rev. John C. Cox III of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church and the Rev. James Allen of St. Luke Methodist Church. Arnie Williams, director of customer service with Mississippi Power Company, will deliver the keynote address. Former Bay Minette City Councilman Chris Norman will serve as chairperson for the Monday program.
This year's theme, "Bear ye one another's burdens and fulfill the law of Christ" (Galatians 6:2), highlights a spirit of unity and togetherness, reflecting the event's longstanding mission to honor King's legacy through community building and advocacy.
The Baldwin County Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee formed in 1986. It rotates its events annually between the cities of Daphne, Bay Minette, Foley and Fairhope to engage new residents and diverse groups each year. For over 37 years, the Baldwin County Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee Inc. has championed programs supporting voting rights, civil rights, community development, housing and scholarships for students.
