Baldwin County Sheriff's Office's 2024 Citizens Academy registration open, deadline Aug. 30

The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) announced registration is open for its 2024 Citizens Academy, an opportunity for residents to gain an in-depth understanding of law enforcement operations.

The six-week academy begins on Tuesday, Sept. 17, and offers participants a hands-on experience with various facets of the sheriff's office. After completion, attendees will have a formal graduation on Oct. 29.

The Citizens Academy is designed to demystify the daily work of law enforcement officers, moving beyond the dramatized portrayals often seen on television. According to the BCSO, most people have limited contact with deputies, and what they do know is often shaped by media representations. The goal is to increase transparency by opening doors and offering an educational experience that builds on the strong relationship the BCSO has with the community.

Classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at various locations within Baldwin County. Each session will be led by subject matter experts from different divisions of the Sheriff's Office, including the Patrol Division, Crime Scene Unit, Homicide/Violent Crimes Unit, K-9 Unit, SWAT and more. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet Sheriff Hoss Mack, members of the command staff and other key personnel.

In addition to classroom instruction, the academy offers interactive experiences such as ride-alongs with patrol deputies and a "Dispatch for a Day" program, which participants can schedule during the academy or up to 90 days after graduation. These activities are designed to give citizens a closer look at the challenges and responsibilities faced by law enforcement officers.

The program is free, but space is limited. To be eligible, participants must be at least 18 years old, reside in Baldwin County, hold a valid Alabama driver's license and pass a background check. The deadline to apply is this Friday, Aug. 30, and applicants are encouraged to register promptly, as spots are expected to fill quickly.

Participants must commit to attending at least five of the six scheduled sessions to receive a certificate of completion. Those interested in learning more about their Sheriff's Office and engaging with law enforcement on a deeper level are encouraged to apply.
