Baldwin County Reality Watch Party Week 7: Bay Minette's Starla Chapman scrapes by

“MasterChef Junior” has reached week six and our Baldwin County reality television stars are still in the game. Bay Minette’s Starla Chapman had a tough week and just scraped by.

It is time to catch up on last week’s episode. If you are behind, this would be a suitable time to stop reading if you want to avoid spoilers.

“MasterChef Junior” week six begins with a mystery box challenge. The 11 remaining chefs find a walnut and are told they must make a dish in 60 minutes with the versatile nut as the star. The winner of the challenge will be safe from elimination.

The chefs ideas range from sweet and savory to simple and ambitious. The top three dishes included Liya’s walnut shrimp with pineapple fried rice, Cruz’s berry and walnut crumble with whipped cream and walnuts and Ciara’s walnut cake with sauternes pears, walnut oat crumble and mascarpone cream. The judges announce that Ciara has the best dish, and she retires to the balcony.

Gordon Ramsay introduces a special guest for the elimination challenge: season seven winner Che Spiotta. Ramsay and Spiotta teach the contestants how to properly flambe before they are given their challenge. Each young chef must make a flambe dish in 45 minutes.

Some of the young chefs struggle while others have a good handle of the challenge. The clock ticks down and the judges call forward the three worthy dishes.

Bay Minette’s Chapman is called forward with her tequila flambeed New York strip with tomatillo salsa and chipotle corn. The judges agree the plate looks like it is missing something like a starch and the seasoning is lacking. Next, the judges call forward A’Dan with his pan-seared lamb with sauteed zucchini, fried capers and fried fingerling potatoes. The lamb is overcooked and there were too many capers on the plate.

The last dish to be called forward is Andrew with his rum pecan cake with caramelized pineapple and caramel sauce. Andrew opted to leave his caramelized bananas off the plate and the judges feel that was a mistake as they were delicious. But it is the raw cake that pushes the judges to dismiss Andrew.

Chapman faced her first bottom three experience, but she has made the top 10. Will she be able to overcome her week six struggles and get back in the top? Check back next week.

“MasterChef Junior” season 8 airs on FOX each Thursday at 7 p.m. CST.
