Baldwin County Memorial Day events honor America's fallen

Originally known as Decoration Day, the late spring was set aside in the years following the Civil War as a time for families to visit cemeteries or memorials and hold family gatherings to remember the fallen soldiers. May 30 became an official federal holiday in 1971 and was named Memorial Day. Today the nation pauses each spring to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.

Unofficially, the day also marks the beginning of the summer season.
