Baldwin County Master Gardener Scholarships open

Applications for the 20th Annual Baldwin County Master Gardener Scholarships are open. The application period began on Jan. 2 and will remain open for new and renewing students through March 19.

The scholarships are made possible through the Baldwin County Master Gardeners, Inc., a non-profit organization. Scholarships are available to Baldwin County students graduating as high school seniors or continuing their college education. Students must be majoring in a “plant-based” field, carry a full-time college load with passing grades and sustain the Baldwin County Master Garden scholarship process in order to qualify for a scholarship.

“We were pleased with the quality and quantity of last year’s applicants,” said Sam Andrews, head of the Scholarship Committee. “We hope to find more students who will take advantage of our unique scholarships.”

The Scholarship Committee expanded its criteria to “plant-based studies” due to “fewer students making a career in horticulture, farming and forestry,” according to a release.

“We first send previous scholarship winners an invitation to apply for a renewal scholarship,” said Andrews. “If there is additional money after the awarding of those scholarships, we reach out to Baldwin County high schools, particularly those with strong science and horticultural classes. We make a major push every year to get the word out to high schools, colleges and universities as well as Kiwanis, Garden Clubs and other groups.”

The Baldwin County Master Gardener Program is an educational outreach program provided and administered by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. The Baldwin County Master Gardeners has approximately 185 active members who are “engaged in programs ranging from community landscaping projects to educational opportunities for gardeners of all ages,” according to a release.

Students interested in the scholarship can find more information and applications on the Baldwin County Master Gardener website at http://baldwinmastergardeners.com/scholarships-2022/, emailing Scholarship.bcmg@gmail.com, or calling 251-929-7922.
