The Baldwin County Historical Society will host its summer quarterly meeting on Sunday, Aug. 21, at 2 p.m. at the historic Daphne City Museum at 405 Dyer Ave. in Daphne.

Daryl Haskew, author of recently released "Portersville," will be the speaker.

Haskew, of Fairhope, spent summers in Coden on Portersville Bay. He heard stories of what the way of life was a hundred years ago – pirates, immigrants, fancy hotels, characters of the underworld, magic, native Americans, large seafood industries, boat building and simple lives of fishing families.

His wife, Brenda, grew up in Fairhope and shared similar stories of the old days in Baldwin County.

Haskew wove the stories together to create a tale of intrigue based on historical events and characters of the Gulf Coast in Portersville, a thriving place very similar to other bayfront villages and resorts all along Mobile Bay. His main character is a Greek immigrant.

Books will be available for sale at the meeting.

Members of the Baldwin County Historical Society are dedicated to the preservation of our history through quarterly programs held at various venues featuring a variety of topics. Membership is $10 per year, per person. The membership year begins in October.

Membership is not required for attendance at programs and meetings. All are open to the public.
