BAY MINETTE — Baldwin County High School’s Trevor Murphy will make a transition from a Tiger to a Wildcat after he inked a scholarship to further his baseball career with Bishop State Community College.

Murphy announced his commitment to the Wildcat baseball program Oct. 13 after he was named a second-team Baldwin County all-star as awarded by the Mobile Baseball Connection.

A scholarship signing ceremony was held Thursday, Nov. 17, at the high school to make it official. Bishop State head coach James Hattenstein was on hand for the event, as well as current and former coaches.

Although Tiger head baseball coach Trenton Higginbothem only recently took over the program in Bay Minette, he already has seen Murphy’s impact on the squad.

“The biggest thing that stands out to me is his work ethic. In our baseball program, we preach ‘Win the details,’ and Trevor does exactly that,” Higginbothem said. “He never skips a rep in the weight room. You can always bet that if someone is getting extra swings in, it is Trevor.”

As a sophomore, Murphy registered a .365 batting average with two home runs and 16 RBIs. In his junior season, he finished with one home run, 20 RBIs and a .342 batting average and was also named all-county as awarded by Baldwin County Public Schools.

His bat should fit right into Bishop State’s lineup that is coming off a season that saw the Wildcats set program records for most wins in a season, most conference wins and the lowest earned-run average – which was also best in the Alabama Community College Conference. Bishop State also collected the most home runs and the highest batting average it ever has.

Last summer, he earned a Perfect Game rating of 7.5 at the Gulf Coast Prospect Showcase in Hoover. Murphy registered a time of 7.5 seconds in the 60-yard dash, an infield velocity of 80 mph and a fastball max velocity of 81 mph in the field with a max exit velocity of 83 mph at the plate.

It was earlier that summer, however, that his fastball topped out at a max velocity of 83 mph at the 2021 Perfect Game Gulf Coast World Series.
