Nearly five decades ago, Willie Nell Evans, a Lillian resident, set a heartfelt tradition in motion.
Wanting to ensure that her daughter's special needs classmates experienced the joy of a traditional Thanksgiving meal, Evans prepared a feast for the entire class.
What began as a small act of kindness has grown into a cherished community event that now serves hundreds in Baldwin County.
On Friday, Nov. 22, Evans' legacy of compassion brought family members and community volunteers together once again at the Foley Civic Center. The event welcomed special needs students, adults, their teachers and aides from schools across the county. Guests were treated to the same warm, home-cooked Thanksgiving meal that Evans once served in her own home.
For years, the Optimist Club of Perdido Bay has been a key partner in the event, contributing food, resources, and volunteers to help make the gathering possible. Their support, combined with the dedication of Evans' family, has allowed this tradition to flourish and reach more people each year.
