Albert (Al) Moore Owen

Albert (Al) Moore Owen was born on Feb. 24, 1954, to parents James Ray Owen and Jo Margaret Moore Owen. He lost his battle with cancer and traded this life for eternity on Oct. 17, 2022. Al lived most of his life in Bay Minette, where he was a long-time member and Deacon of the First Baptist Church.

Al contracted polio at the age of 6 months, but in spite of that, he never complained. He always wanted to be treated just like one of the guys, evidenced by his participation in youth football, while wearing a leg brace, hunting, fishing and just enjoying the great outdoors. As a young man he became a member of the Order of the Arrow which is an elite group within the Boy Scouts of America organization. He cherished the many close relationships made with his Pi Kappa Alpha brothers while attending the University of Montevallo. His work history spanned a multitude of areas from debt collecting to working with specialty wood products and exotic woods.

He was an avid fan of ALL University of Alabama sports. On any given game day/night he could be heard cheering on or grimacing, whether on the television or on the radio. If he wasn’t watching or listening, he was reading, talking or texting about it. Basketball, football, golf … he kept up with all of them.

Above all of this, Al was kind soul. Giving to a fault. Sometimes beyond his means. He helped take care of his aging parents, his ailing wife and any friend in need. Many people stated that Al was “an inspiration”.

Al was preceded in death by his parents James R. Owen and Jo Margaret Owen, his wife of over 30 years, Terry Ann Gibson Owen and nephew James R. Owen, III.

He is survived by his sister Margaret (Peggy) Owen Ryan (Bill Webster), his brothers James Ray Owen Jr. (Shelley), and Lee Wilson Owen, nephews and nieces Jennifer Owen Peyer, Chandler D. Hazelwood (Kati), Robert A. Jones (Trish), Benjamin M. Jones, Chad Z. Ryan (Joanne), Kevin S. Ryan (Leslie), Margaret Ryan Diedtrich (Jeff), and 18 great nephews and nieces.

A memorial service was held Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022, at the First Baptist Church in Bay Minette. Visitation will began at 9 am with the service immediately following.

In lieu of flowers the family request a donation be made in Al’s memory to First Baptist Church, PO Box 1628, Bay Minette, AL 36507.
