Alabama program aims to bridge the gap in child nutrition during summer months

Posted

As summer approaches, the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) is inviting organizations to register as sponsors for the 2025 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).

This initiative, backed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), aims to ensure children continue receiving nutritious meals even when school is not in session according to a news release.

For many families, school-provided meals serve as a vital source of nourishment during the academic year. The SFSP fills the "nutrition gap" by providing meals and snacks to children aged 18 and under at approved sites across Alabama. These sites are operated by sponsors who receive reimbursement for serving meals that meet USDA guidelines.

ALSDE is encouraging schools, parks and recreation programs, faith-based organizations and other nonprofit groups to participate in this underutilized program. Sponsors in eligible areas will receive training to help them operate the SFSP and ensure equitable access to meals. All meals are provided without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability.

Organizations eligible to sponsor the SFSP include local School Food Authorities, government and private nnprofit organizations, as well as new government or nonprofit sponsors. Participating groups play a critical role in addressing food insecurity among Alabama's youth during the summer months.

Parents and guardians can rest assured that any child who visits an approved site will have access to free, nutritious meals.

To learn more about becoming a sponsor or to register for training, contact ALSDE's Child Nutrition Programs at (334) 694-4656 or visit the USDA's Summer Food Service Program website. Training registration is available at SFSP 2025 Training Registration.
