After recent Gulf Shores fish kill, what will happen to the Mullet Toss?

Posted

After the fish kill in Gulf Shores' Little Lagoon the week of Jan. 21, where thousands of mullet were found belly-up along the shorelines after a cold-snap that brought up to 10 inches of snow to Baldwin County, you may be wondering whether it will affect the Flora-Bama's annual Mullet Toss.

Jenifer Parnell with the FloraBama, which puts on the event each year as a massive fundraiser that draws thousands on the last weekend of April, said the mullet used for the toss comes from Safe Harbor Seafood.

"I'm not sure how (the fish kill) will affect them, but I hope they have enough for us come April," Parnell said.

This year's Mullet Toss will be held April 25-27, according to the FloraBama website.

Randy Shutt with Safe Harbor Seafood in Bon Secour said the fish kill will not affect the fish used in the mullet toss because the type of mullet that fell victim to the cold was "small silver mullet," which is not used for the mullet toss. Shutt said the freeze "didn't affect the regular mullet" that is used in the toss.

"Matter of fact, we've been getting a lot of regular mullet in (since the freeze)," Shutt said.
