African American conjure, root work, divination group celebrates newest class at Daphne waterfront

Posted

A graduation ceremony was held for the Conjure South Hoodoo Institute, home of traditional African American conjure, root work and divination, at Belrose Park in Daphne on the shores of Mobile Bay, Saturday, July 21.

The ceremony marks the end of a year-long learning process for students of Her Imperial Majesty Queen Cotaliya of the Imperial Court Milner-Meadows De la Livre, the founder of Conjure South LLC. This year's class included students from as far away as Ohio but in previous years has attracted international students as well.

Jennifer English, of Spanish Fort and one of this year's graduates, got involved with Conjure South in 2022 and said Queen Cotaliya has helped her "find the connection to my magic within my own lineage." English added there is a misconception that these practices are evil or devil worship.

"This is about connecting with your individual ancestors," she said. "When someone dies, we don't just put them in the ground and move on. We want to honor them, celebrate their life but, and more than that, go out and have a moment to talk with and listen to them, feel them around you."

Conjure South provides traditional products, services, education and literature to those interested to connecting to traditional healing practices and folk practices in addition to providing traditional and authentic services for alternative healing and spiritual work.
