FOLEY — Tori Blackmon, senior at Foley High School, was named the artist winner for the 50th-annual Art in the Park t-shirt design. Blackmon received two awards during a reception held in her honor at the Foley Art Center. In attendance were Blackmon and her family, FHS Principal Russ Moore, FHS Art Teacher Tracy Wilhelm, Foley Art Center Director Joseph Chubb, Foley Art Center Board of Directors Vickie Moore, and Art in the Park committee members Darrelyn Dunmore, Chloe Salinas and Kelly Crosby.
Blackmon received the first-annual Linda Koniar Emerging Artist Award and a scholarship worth $1,000.
The Linda Koniar Emerging Artist Award will be given to a Baldwin County student each year in conjunction with Art in the Park. The award winner will have their artwork featured on the Art in the Park t-shirts. The award is named after Linda Koniar, chairman of Art in the Park for many years. She has a goal of supporting local children and their desire to express themselves through art.
The scholarship was donated to Blackmon by the Foley Art Center in honor of the 50th-annual festival.
“The Board of Directors were proud to reward Ms. Blackmon for her spirit and artistic ability,” according to a release. “The board is honored to play a small part in Tori’s decision to go to college this fall and grow her talents.”
The 50th Art in the Park will take place May 7 - 8 over Mother’s Day weekend at Heritage Park in downtown Foley.
“The famous artist Degas once said, ‘Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.’ When I look at the beautiful butterfly that (Tori) created, I see playfulness and joy, renewal, and a sense of community,” said Crosby. “(Her) artwork reminds me of Foley and the growth and joy that our community embraces.”
