No, this isn’t the scene of a drug runner action movie.
The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office was contacted on Thursday, June 26, regarding a bagged bundle that washed ashore on the Fort Morgan peninsula, which is an incorporated part of the county’s jurisdiction. According to Capt. Daniel Steelman with the agency, their Coastal Enforcement Units verified its presence and consistency with illegal drugs and transported it to Investigations Command for analysis.
That analysis showed the bundle contained 50 individually wrapped kilos of cocaine, weighing about 110 pounds.
A news release from Steelman said the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations was contacted to continue the investigation.
Baldwin County Sheriff Anthony Lowery said in the release it would not be uncommon for additional bundles to surface, and he asked the public to report any that do to law enforcement.
The agency asked that the public do not open bundles or packages, as “they could contain hazardous chemicals or dangerous drugs.”
