Not only did Daphne junior Abby J. Johnson score two touchdowns offensively in a 32-12 win over B.C. Rain on Sept. 19, but she also set a single-game record with five interceptions defensively.
In the second year of sanctioned play under the Alabama High School Athletic Association, Johnson’s five interceptions were the most in a single game and helped the Trojans move to 4-0 overall. One of the thefts was returned nearly the entire length of the field for a touchdown to complement a pair of receiving scores and 219 receiving yards from classmate Aubrey Gregg.
Fellow junior Dasia Matt was all over the field for Daphne and finished with 54 receiving yards, 45 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns offensively as well as 5 flag pulls defensively.
Trojans extend season-opening hot streak
With a 50-6 win over Satsuma on Sept. 24, the Trojans, who won the Class 6A-7A Region 1-2 title in their inaugural season last year, moved to 5-0 overall having outscored opponents 189-42.
Johnson, also a standout on the basketball court and softball diamond, helped lead the way against the Gators with three different types of touchdowns, two of which came through the air and two on punt returns. She caught a touchdown as part of 43 receiving yards and also threw a 66-yard passing touchdown to sophomore Mariah Williams to complement a pair of punt returns that hit pay dirt.
A pair of middle schoolers also stepped into the spotlight as eighth-grader Kenzie McDonald added 3 flag pulls and seventh-grader Maggie Sheerer collected 2 flag pulls on top of 2 receptions for 15 yards and a touchdown. Matt racked up 109 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns as senior Addy Hollis helped spearhead the defense with 8 flag pulls and 1 pass breakup.

Senior Basia Czarkowska complemented the offensive attack with 12 carries for 168 rushing yards as well as 71 receiving yards as part of a 2-touchdown night.
