Federal charges are pending further investigation after the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office recently discovered a person in possession of roughly 180 counterfeit and fraudulent Apple products worth over $50,000 during a Tuesday, July 16, traffic stop.
According to BCSO, an investigation during a traffic stop on a California-plated Toyota RAV4 has led law enforcement to believe that Vincent Tang of Malaysia was involved in a multi-state counterfeiting scheme, buying Apple products from Target stores across the Gulf Coast and engraving their serial numbers into counterfeited items that they would then return for a refund.
Later, another subject, Chalvin Tan, was contacted at Sheriff's Office Investigation Command in Robertsdale and detained for investigation upon arrival where another search yielded more counterfeits prepared for return, per BSCO.
"A search warrant was obtained and served at the Red Roof Inn in Bay Minette, which resulted in the seizure of additional electronic devices," BCSO states. "Multiple cell phones, laptops, bank cards and a laser engraver were seized."
Tang and Tan were both arrested for possession of a forgery device, theft of trade secrets and trafficking in stolen identities.
